16-Oct Feeding: Feeding a horse in different levels of work and special cases e.g. young, old, or sick horses. Keeping horses and ponies through the seasons stabled and at grass. How to make up a simple feed chart.
23-Oct Health & Welfare: Recognise when a horse is off colour or is not sound and should not be worked. Treatment of minor wounds and basic nursing. When to call the Vet. Understand the importance of regular worming, the inspection and care of the horses’ teeth and keeping health records.
6-Nov Anatomy: Thorough knowledge of the points of the horse, and the horse’s skeletal frame. The basic outline of the digestive system. The basic structure of the horses’ foot and its function. The position of the main internal organs in the horse.
13-Nov Tack & Rugging Up: Uses and fitting of rugs and blankets. Bandaging for warmth, protection and simple veterinary purposes. Washing & Storage or rugs and blankets. Principles of biting. Daily cleaning and care of all saddlery. Fitting lunging equipment, various types of boots, breastplates and martingales. Inspection of horses for injury from ill fitting saddles, bridles, boots etc.
